Ah Nhau

For date night, Danny and I tried a new Vietnamese restaurant in Williamsburg called “Ah Nhau.” I suggested this restaurant because they followed me on twitter and I love trying new restaurants in new cool areas (we haven’t really been around the Williamsburg scene, so this was a good time to do so). It was a saturday night and we thought it would be super crowded and popping but to our surprise, there weren’t too many diners at Ah Nhau. The restaurant is nice and was decorated with asian influence (there was even an outdoor eating area).

For drinks, I ordered coconut milk (just because I love anything coconut) and Danny ordered thai coffee (he originally wanted thai iced tea but they ran out of the iced tea (weird!!!). My coconut milk was light, yummy, and refreshing. Danny’s thai iced coffee was heavy and too sweet. It was iced coffee made with condensed milk and was just too much like dessert (would’ve been a great after dinner drink). Our waitress recommended it but it was definitely not a good drink to have with a meal.

For our appetizers, I ordered Roti Quail and Danny ordered classic pho with beef. My roti quail was super yummy and was sweet, thick, and very curry’y. I love quail (my dad used to make it a lot when we were younger). The quail was juicy and moist. The shallots and other vegetables were crunchy and tasted great with the roti. The only thing I didn’t like was how sticky my hands got.

Danny’s classic pho was good as well. The broth was light and earthy, rich in beefy flavor. The rice noodles were cooked well and also absorbed the beefy flavor. The beef was rare and when cooked in it’s own broth, was super beefy and moist. The pho was good but I don’t think it was the best we’ve ever tried.

For our entrees, I ordered the caramelized sliced pork belly and Danny ordered the Mi Xao with beef. My caramelized sliced pork belly was super delicious! The pork belly was braised in Vietnamese black pepper and served in a caramelized sauce. The pork belly came out in a blazing steaming pot and when the lid was opened, I immediately smelled the aroma of the caramelized sauce. The pork belly was super moist and sweet! I mixed some of the sauce in with some rice and it was just super yummy!

Danny’s entree on the other hand, was not as good as mine. The Mi Xao consisted of wonton noodles with beef sauteed with chives, bean sprouts, carrots, and snow peas. The beef was overcooked and the wonton noodles were stuck together and were al dente. The vegetables were good but couldn’t save the dish. Definitely not a dish we’d order again.

After dinner, we just walked around Williamsburg and there were a bunch of places we have to try (Meatball shop!!!). We also grabbed some bubble tea at this cute little shop (we love bubble tea!) As for Ah Nhau, we’d probably visit for lunch if we’re in the area.

Elizabeth Street Night Market

I finally found the pictures from the Elizabeth Street Night Market, a fun filled night on August 25th. The Elizabeth Street Night Market was at Openhouse Gallery 19 Kenmare, with appearances by the Korilla BBQ food truck and vendors ranging from mini cupcakes to banh mi sandwiches to teriyaki balls. Fun night with yummy food and my loving boyfriend!

The first thing we tried were fishballs on a stick,

peking duck wrapped in bun, and Thai iced tea from HK Street Cart. We didn’t want to order too much from HK Street Cart because we wanted to try other food and didn’t want to be too full. The fishballs were yummy (seriously, how can anyone mess up fishballs?) and spicy. The peking duck was super juicy and had so much flavor. The bun was soft and moist. My only complaint was that it was a little small. The thai iced tea was light and refreshing!

The next thing we tried was Teriyaki balls from Mimi and Coco. They came in an order of 6 and we had 1/2 shrimp and 1/2 sausage. Both were equally good! They made the Teriyaki balls in cast iron grill, allowing the Teriyaki balls to be fried on the outside and super gooey on the inside. Then topped with sliced almonds and a blend of their special sauce (I’m assuming it’s teriyaki and maybe honey?). These Teriyaki balls were super good! The shrimp was super juicy and the sausage had so much flavor. These are a must try!

Next was the Korilla BBQ food truck. I ordered a set of 3 tacos and Danny ordered the burrito. For my 3 tacos, I wanted to try each of the meats that were offered, so 1 had ribeye, another had pulled pork, and the last one had chicken. Each taco was topped with tomato salsa, cheese, and kimchi. I don’t really like kimchi because it’s a little spicy but the kimchi added just enough heat to each taco. The tacos were yummy and flavorful but I did enjoy the ribeye the most. It was moist and super flavorful. The chicken was good but a little dry and the pork was really spicy, not my cup of tea. Next time, I would definitely order just the ribeye.

Danny ordered a pulled pork burrito. Had we known how spicy the pork was, we would’ve ordered the ribeye instead. The burrito was really big and definitely filled us up. There was also kimchi, sticky rice, cheese, and tomato salsa throw in there. The burrito was good but after a few bites, my mouth was on fire, so we had to eat in intervals of a few minutes. Overall, the burrito was good but next time, definitely order the ribeye and not the pulled pork (we’re not the biggest fans of super spicy food).

Unfortunately, we were almost full, so we didn’t want to overstuff ourselves with banh mi sandwiches from Justin Wang and the mini cupcakes from Filled with Sweets. Our mouths were on fire from the Korilla BBQ tacos and burrito, so we opted for some shaved ice from the Shaved Ice Shop. They shaved the ice from this huge block of ice right in front of you and you chose 3 different toppings (fruit, cereal, candy, etc…) and a scoop of either mango sorbet or green tea ice cream. We chose mango, kiwi, watermelon, and a scoop of mango sorbet, topped with condensed milk. This was super yummy and cold, especially after eating such hot food on such a hot night. The milk and the ice was just nice, cold and pleasant, while the fruit added nice texture and fresh fruity flavor. The mango sorbet was super good and mango’y.

Nodus Noodles

I recently worked a couple promotions for BeerLao at Nodus Noodles in Sunnyside, Queens. Nodus Noodles is a thai restaurant that’s located on a small block. From the outside, Nodus Noodles looks like any ordinary restaurant but once you go inside, it looks like a cozy, chic restaurant in the city. After working each promotion, the manager served me a yummy dish of glass noodles. I haven’t really tried much thai food but this was absolutely yummy! There were bell peppers, white onion, celery, broccoli, and chicken. The noodles were stir fried and was so soft. The vegetables were so crunchy and the chicken was so flavorful. This dish felt very homey and comforting, kind of like something my dad would make. I would definitely come back next time I’m in the area!

My 24th Birthday Dinner at KinShop

So I turned 24 years old on June 28th. I don’t like to make a big deal out of my birthdays, so I tend to have small quiet celebrations with people I care about. I’ve been meaning to try “KinShop,” Top Chef Winner Harold Dieterle’s thai restaurant. I have heard amazing things, so I figured why not go there for my birthday with my boyfriend? My friend also had a belly dancing show in the Lower East Side that night and we wanted to support her, so we figured going out to eat in the city would be even more convenient. Thai food is so good and if Harold cooked the way he did on Top Chef, I would have no doubt the food would be no less than amazing.

KinShop is in such a convenient area. We walked in and it seemed so casual, relaxed, and so unpretentious. I noticed Harold in the back by the bar right away. I was definitely going to try to get a pic with him at the end of dinner. I started off with a Thai Iced Tea (so good and refreshing on such a humid night). We went out for lunch with my family, so we were still stuffed from that meal. Since we were so full, we didn’t order appetizers.

For our entrees, I ordered the stir fried rice flakes and Danny ordered the thin egg noodles and dry aged broth. My stir fried rice flakes consisted of rock shrimp, cauliflower, sawtooth herb & fried garlic. This was absolutely delicious! I love thick noodles, shrimp, and cauliflower. This dish reminded me of what my parents would make us at home. My boyfriend’s noodle dish was the best dish of the night! The short ribs were flavorful and the noodle soup was just so comforting. The broth flavor was so developed and so rich. Danny loves asian noodle soup and this was definitely high up on his list of faves.

After finishing dinner, I just wanted to look at the dessert menu and had no intentions on ordering anything because I was so stuffed. I saw the lychee sorbet and just had to have it (I love lychee and I love cold desserts on a hot night). It was pretty good and lychee’y. I wish there were more scoops of it and maybe some fresh lychees on top but that’s just my opinion.

After dinner, I asked the hostess if I could get a picture with Harold and she said she would find out if he was busy or not. He was but he said I could get a pic. I told him how much of a fan I am of his, wanted to try KinShop so bad, how great the food was, etc… Being the klutz I am, I dropped my digital camera on the floor and it was on the fritz, so Danny used his HTC phone camera to take all of the pictures. While Danny was getting to the camera, Harold showed 1 of his line cooks who was the boss. All I heard was Harold saying something along the lines of “you know how to cook that? If not, I’ll show you, etc…” I just thought that was pretty cool and authoritative. So finally I got a picture and left a really long review. We are definitely going back to KinShop for some more amazing Thai food.
