At age 19 Joel Weishaus was a Jr. executive for a Madison Ave. agency specializing in movie advertising. Soon after his 21st birthday, he resigned and flew to Los Angeles, where he realized that he must devote his life to the Literary and Visual Arts. He returned to New York, and four years later moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he became the Literary Editor of U.C. Berkeley’s student newspaper. In 1971, he edited On the Mesa: An Anthology of Bolinas Writing (City Lights Books). Also that year he published Oxherding: A Reworking of the Zen Text, with Block Prints by Arthur Okamura. (Cranium Press). In the early 1980s, Weishaus edited Thomas Merton’s Woods, Shore, Desert (Museum of New Mexico Press, 1982), In 1982, he became an Adjunct Curator (Video Art) at The University of New Mexico’s Fine Arts Museum, and later a Writer-in-Residence at UNM’s Center for Southwest Research. He also wrote featured pieces on photography for Artspace: A Journal of Contemporary Southwest Art. Weishaus was Visiting Faculty at Portland State University Department of English (2003-2007), and a Visiting Scholar and Research Fellow at The University of California, Santa Barbara (2011-2012).
